We are proud to have been involved for nearly 10 years with two of the highest participation surfing events Australia and worldwide.
The Roxy Surf Jam (October) and Ripcurl Girls go Surfing Day (December) sees hundreds of female surfers old and new each year and continue to be our most popular events. With event t-shirts, goody packs and a surfing lesson included why wouldn't you go?
Also in March or April we run a South Aussie version of Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There' in conjunction with our Women's Classic.
Coastview Motor Inn Women’s Classic / Girls Get into It! Festival of girls surfing.
On September 11th and 12th 2010, surfing girls of all crafts and ages took to the surf on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Saturday saw 20 girls visit Southport Beach on the mid coast for the Surf Culture Australia “Girls Get Into It” learn to surf day. The girls braved cool weather and a strong current after recent rains this year and the half to one metre waves were close to perfect for those in the early part of their surfing career. There were grins from ear to ear as the girls experienced the fun and thrill of surfing in the chilly spring conditions. A special thanks to all the parents and spectators for coming down to the event and checking out the action. All entrants in the weekend event received free entry into the raffle for a new G-Board beginners surf board.
With a dropping swell on the mid coast on Saturday contest director, Ray Palmer called for an early start for the Coastview Motor Inn Women’s Classic on Sunday.
Sunday morning and “The Dump” at Port Elliott on the south coast awakens with light offshore winds and perfectly clean 1 to 2 metre waves. Forty competitors of all ages would challenge their skills against the face of a fresh clean swell. In total there were 6 divisions, 15 heats, 12 volunteers and up to 80 spectators.
The near perfect conditions brought the best out of youngster Brinkley Davies (Hope Forest), after a narrow escape in the first round. Brinkley also finished 2nd in the U18 division. She saved her best surfing for the Open Final where a day high score of 17/20 was too good for a crew of younger surfers. Second was Alice Gilbert from Goolwa who also took out the Fly Boardriding Juniors, 2rd went to Georgie Thomas (Middleton) and 4th was Salomae Hasselgrove also from Middleton.
The Preece’s Southport Surf Longboard division was taken out by Erica Oemckefrom Port Noarlunga South then last year’s winner Karen Riley (Port Willunga), followed by Surf Culture senior instructor Cheryl Buck. All girls in this division showed great strength and stamina to negotiate the strong surf on their nine foot boards. It was nice to see these girls stir up the crowded peak and enforce the contest amongst some difficult surfers.
The Fly Boardriding under 18’s was taken out by Alice Gilbert ahead of Brinkley Davies, Salomae Haselgrove and Ellie Francis.
The The Fly Boardriding under 15’s showcased our future talent and eventually it was youngster Tayla Hanak from Yankalilla who took the trophy from Ellie Francis, Jamie Buchanan and Grace Gilbert. Most girls in the under age divisions had their first experience with a contest of this calibre and to perform as they did in the solid waves was a real credit to them. Well done! Keep your eyes and ears open for these young surfers, they are the future of women’s surfing in South Australia.
At the other end of the age spectrum was the M & S Campbell Plumbing and Seniors where Longboard Champion Erica Oemcke narrowly edged out Chery Buck.
As a part of their responsibility to help with the growth of surfing in South Australia, Surf Culture Australia, the contest organisers, also provide an opportunity for first time competitors to experience the feeling of competitive surfing. The Surf Culture Australia “Novice” division had five entries and well done to 10 year old Hanna Maddison-Tennant from Aldinga Beach for taking the trophy and $50 in the final. She out manouvred Gemma Holman (10), Kaylee Scott, Tyler Orr and Kirra Clark. In the 20 minute final there were a total of 51 waves caught and the fierce nature of the competition even saw Gemma and Tyler high fiving on one wave! Watch this space!
Sadly earlier in 2010 the event founder and Surfing Australia Hall of Fame Member Christine Cox lost her battle with cancer. In her memory the Cox Family and Surf Culture Australia introduced a new trophy to this year’s event. The Christine Cox Memorial Trophy for Most Inspirational Performance at the Women’s Classic. The trophy is awarded to a surfer who displays Some of Christine’s qualities including courage, determination and dedication to surfing. The inaugural winner was Jamie Buchanan of Port Elliott. The U15 finalist really stepped up to outside of where she was comfortable and put on a determined display of surfing in the heavy waves. Keep an eye on this young surfer and her peers they will take surfing in South Australia to the next level!
The weekend festival of women’s surfing concluded with a great meal at Coastview Motor Inn / Costa Vista Café with presentation of awards and trophies. Any girls who placed in the finals who were unable to make presentations can contact Surf Culture Australia to arrange collection of trophies.
